LCS Welcomes New Counselor!

Posted on Jan 26, 2022 11:00:00 AM by Theresa Tyson

The trials we have faced over the past two years has disrupted so many aspects of life inside and outside of our school. This has been difficult for all of us, but mostly our students.

LCS has been searching for a resource to help the faculty, staff, parents and mostly our students navigate this new normal we are facing and are pleased to announce that Candice Walker will be re-joining LCS in a part time counseling capacity.

CounselorFor those of you that did not work with Candice previously, she returns to Liberty Christian School after over a decade.   Although not a native of the Baltimore area she calls it home, because she met her husband, Lawrence here. Soon after marriage, they became members of Liberty Church in 2004. In 2011, the Lord directed her family's path to move to western Pennsylvania and now back to Maryland.

She was a former public and private middle school teacher, and even taught middle school science at Liberty Christian. She was the Director of Middle Grade Partnership and former LCS Board Member. Most recently, Candice worked as a counselor at Life Counseling Ministries at Chapelgate Christian Academy. Candice holds degrees in Psychology and Sociology and training in Biblical Counseling. Her oldest son, Molek still resides in western PA and was a former student at LCS. Her youngest son Jonathan is homeschooled – her full time job. Candice loves watching Jonathan on the tennis court and watching a good documentary with her husband.

Prayer-1

Candice is excited to help students navigate social, spiritual and cultural concerns by being a bridge to Christ. She will focus on Jeremiah 29:11 -

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Celebrating Earth Day 2021

Posted on Apr 19, 2021 12:15:00 PM by Theresa Tyson

Our Earth. An incredible place.

EarthEach year, on April 22nd people from all over the world celebrate in what is known as Earth Day! Earth Day not only raises awareness but puts words into actions to fight against things like pollution and deforestation.

Earth Day was officially created in 1970 by a Wisconsin Senator to help raise awareness about environmental issues. (Find out more about the origins of Earth Day on their website: https://www.earthday.org/history/)

Here are some ways YOU can participate in Earth Day - not JUST on April 22nd, but any time of year to help save our planet!

Reuse Reduce Recycle 2

This is not just a catchy alliteration, but a clever way of remembering some VERY practical ways of helping our planet thrive:

  1. Reuse!
    1. Reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags.
    2. Use a Nalgene type water bottle instead of a plastic disposable one.
    3. Cut back on buying plastic items.
    4. Compost
    5. Get creative - instead of throwing away items you no longer want or need, offer them to someone who may find use of them (clothes, books, toys etc). OR turn them into fun craft projects or gifts - that glass jar, cardboard box or plastic bottle would be the perfect springboard for some fun art activities (musical instruments, posters, planters!)

  2. Reduce!
    1. Turn off the lights when you are not in the room!
    2. Don’t let the water run (especially when you are brushing your teeth).
    3. Walk, bike, or skate to your destination [[if possible]] instead of driving.
  3. Recycle!
    1. Today, most items are labeled whether it is safe to recycle or not! Making the process EXTRA easy!
    2. Did you know that some items you THROW AWAY that go to a landfill and could take YEARS to decompose?? Research tells us that the plastic water bottle you throw away takes over 500 years to “break down” and it is still polluting our environment since plastic never really decomposes!

Other Great Ideas??

  1. noah-buscher-x8ZStukS2PM-unsplashPlant a Tree or a Garden!
    1. Researchers say that about 15 BILLION trees are cut down every year.
      1. Trees not only absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen, they also provide shelter and habitats for wildlife!
  2. Build a Birdhouse
    1. This can help provide safe shelters for birds to nest!
  3. Educate Yourself by Reading Books on this Topic
    1. Share what you learn with others!
  4. Volunteer Your Time john-cameron-WOT8JOjncHk-unsplash
    1. Pick up trash in your neighborhood!
      1. By picking up trash, you are helping our environment be a safer and cleaner place for us and the animals that live here too.
    2. Organize or join a park clean up.

The possibilities are endless! How will you celebrate Earth Day this year?
