School uniforms/dress codes are a fact of life in most private schools and seem to be a growing trend in the public school arena.  Have you ever considered the value of such a policy?  Here are 10 benefits of school uniforms/dress codes:

A school uniform/dress code leads to...

  1. A more productive learning environment -   Uniforms/dress codes reduce distractions, allowing students to focus more on their academics and less on the competition and peer pressure associated with keeping up with the latest fashion trends.

  1. Improved relations between teachers and students -  When students wear uniforms, research has shown that teachers see students in a more respectful light.  In addition, students are perceived to have a more positive attitude and demeanor when they are in uniform.  This makes things less stressful for the teacher and creates a more efficient learning environment.

  2. Increased self-confidence and better preparation for the “real world” -  Being a student is a child’s job, and dressing for success not only improves the current learning atmosphere, it also prepares children for their future jobs where they will likely have to adhere to work-related dress codes.  In addition, students who wear uniforms learn lessons in responsibility as there are normally consequences associated dress code violations.

  1. Fewer discipline issues -   Students who wear uniforms tend to show a greater respect for authority and order (see #2), creating an environment in which potential conflict can be handled in a more positive and constructive manner.

  1. A greater sense of community -  Think of a sports team and the sense of pride instilled as a result of wearing a team uniform.  The same holds true for the school community where a dress code can also foster a greater sense of ownership and belonging.

  1. Increased school safety - When students are dressed uniformly, it is easier to identify non-students and strangers, better equipping the school staff to handle questionable situations accordingly.

  1. Time savings - Dress codes simplifies the clothing selection process, making getting dressed in the mornings a whole lot faster and easier.

  1. Money savings -  Uniforms/dress codes eliminate the need for parents to buy a large number of wardrobe pieces and instead to focus on a few key uniform items, resulting in cost savings for the family.

  2. Creative self-expression - Some believe uniforms/dress codes stifle individual creativity.  On the contrary, they offer children the opportunity to creatively find ways for self-expression outside of their physical appearance.  This creativity can manifest itself academically, athletically, artistically, socially, and through their own unique personalities.  Ultimately, students benefit by learning that self-expression and individuality come from within.

  1. A greater appreciation for dress down days - As a reward for a job well done, just like a worker who looks forward to a casual Friday, students who wear uniforms do enjoy the incentive and privilege of dressing down from time to time.
