School uniforms/dress codes are a fact of life in most private schools and seem to be a growing trend in the public school arena.  Have you ever considered the value of such a policy?  Here are 10 benefits of school uniforms/dress codes:

1. A more productive learning environment -   Uniforms/dress codes reduce distractions, allowing students to focus more on their academics and less on the competition and peer pressure associated with keeping up with the latest fashion trends.  

2. Improved relations between teachers and students -  When students wear uniforms, research has shown that teachers see students in a more respectful light.  In addition, students are perceived to have a more positive attitude and demeanor when they are in uniform.  This makes things less stressful for the teacher and creates a more efficient learning environment.

Increased self-confidence and better preparation for the “real world” -  Being a student is a child’s job, and dressing for success not only improves the current learning atmosphere, it also prepares children for their future jobs where they will likely have to adhere to work-related dress codes.  In addition, students who wear uniforms learn lessons in responsibility as there are normally consequences associated dress code violations.

4. Fewer discipline issues -   Students who wear uniforms tend to show a greater respect for authority and order (see #2), creating an environment in which potential conflict can be handled in a more positive and constructive manner.
